You’ve received a “90-day Letter” that as the name indicates your appeal needs to be filed within 90 days of the date of the letter. Look online and you can get some generalized information about the process.
I always recommend that you get a professional here. This is a good situation because once you get a petition filed in the United States Tax Court, your file gets transferred to IRS Appeals and an appeals officer is assigned your case. It’s a great opportunity to explain your situation and negotiate a satisfactory resolution — sometimes even including completely eliminating the tax altogether!
